Tinnitus Counseling, Hourly

Tinnitus & Audiology Center of Southern California offers both a 60 and 90 minute specialized TRT Counseling session, to answer your questions based on medical records and information you provide or to provide additional counseling to those who have already been seen here for other care. While most counseling sessions are scheduled at a later date than testing services, there may be occasions where you might want significantly more time after testing to discuss your situation. Only a brief 15 minute session is included with testing alone. If you are a patient under tinnitus treatment elsewhere and are bringing copies of your medical records, looking for a second opinion, we can review your treatment instructions, present a qualified opinion, and make an initial set of recommendations for you. No testing is performed during a counseling session.

Comprehensive Misophonia Consultation

This is a face-to-face two hour session, offered exclusively at Tinnitus & Audiology Center of Southern California, Inc., concerning management of misophonia and other types of decreased sound tolerance. The session includes a discussion of the conditions, treatments, methods and the development of an individual treatment plan. Certain auditory tests may additionally be needed, if you do not bring these test results with you. Tests include a basic audiogram covering the standard 250kHz-8000kHz range, a ultra-high frequency audiogram covering 10kHz, 12kHz, 14kHz and 16kHz minimum, a limited or complete DPOAE otoacoustic emissions at least through 8000Khz, and complete loudness discomfort-level threshold testing across the full 250Khz-16KHz range.

Note that only the basic audiogram is considered a standard test. The other tests may not be available at many facilities or through your health plan. Please ask about making arrangements separately for any testing you may require here. Tinnitus & Audiology Center of Southern California, Inc. charges for testing on a fee-for-service basis, in addition to Misophonia consultations. In such cases, we will need to schedule extra time to perform each test. Alternatively, testing alone may be conducted via a separate arrangement with Audiology Services of Newhall. Please inquire about this.

Level 2 Tinnitus, Sound Sensitivity & Hearing Diagnostic Testing

This one hour auditory test battery is much more comprehensive than a standard 4-7 procedure audiogram and covers 23-35 measurements of tinnitus, sound sensitivity and various aspects of hearing abilities. This includes ultra-high frequency threshold testing, may include speech-in-noise testing, tinnitus masking effect testing and screening for a range of frequently overlapping medical conditions that are well known to complicate tinnitus and sound sensitivity distress and intrusiveness. Includes a 15 minute consultation and an initial set of case management recommendations, focused mostly on diagnostic and medical management. This service is available through Tinnitus & Audiology Center of Southern California, Inc. as well as Audiology Services of Newhall and Audiology Partners Mission Hills. Please ask about this.

Level 3 Tinnitus Rehabilitation Consultation, Comprehensive

Rehabilitative Treatment for Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, Misophonia and Hearing Loss

Currently, we offer 7 forms of Sound Therapy for tinnitus, 4 Sound Therapies for hyperacusis, 2 for misophonia and hearing aid treatments for hearing loss. Combination treatments are also available for patients with multiple conditions.

We refer to mental healthcare specialists, physicians and other healthcare providers for specialized care within their fields of expertise. Some types of treatment may be more effective, produce quicker results, or long term benefit. Individual results vary depending on:

  • the individual's medical condition,
  • choice of treatment,
  • whether the patient follows the correct treatment protocols and our recommendations for the duration of the therapeutic treatment period, and
  • the patient's underlying physical and mental health conditions.

Compliance with the requirements of treatment is essential to receive the best chance of clinically significant benefit. Please remember that rehabilitative treatment is not a medical cure.

Hearing Aids and Tinnitus

Hearing aids do sometimes serve as an integral part of tinnitus and hyperacusis rehabilitative treatment. In some cases, however, hearing aids have the least chance of providing relief. This is especially true in cases of significant intrusive tinnitus or hyperacusis. Hearing instruments are generally more effective in milder cases.

Hearing aids cannot help if they are not worn. Certain types and styles sometimes will aggravate tinnitus and sound sensitivity. We routinely test the potential positive effect of hearing aids along with other devices, as part of rehabilitative assessments. Approximately 40% of tinnitus sufferers cannot use hearing aids at all due to insufficient hearing loss to tolerate amplification. On the other hand, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy and Neuromonics can often be applied when use of hearing aids is not possible. Special devices, which combine the features of hearing aids and TRT sound generators, are called combination devices.

General Advice on Treatment

Sound Therapies are not devices. They are methods using particular sounds from special devices, set in precise ways and uses for specific amounts of time. The overall purpose is to induce habituation or symptom reduction from reactions to and perception of tinnitus and/or intrusive disturbing sound. This occurs by retraining the brain, the conditioned attention process, and the auditory system using controlled sound exposure and supportive thinking and control of attention. Combinations of treatments sometimes produce better results than single treatments. We recommend following treatments based on medical evidence and clinically validated proven results, following the correct protocol or method of use, considering personal preferences, and by applying patients and persistence.

The treatments we use follow published clinically validated or leading experimental protocols used by other specialty programs for individuals with comparable conditions. Progress occurs gradually in stages, with maximum benefit often not occurring until later stages of treatment. Patience helps. Individual results may vary. There is no guarantee of specific benefits however. The success rate of professionally managed care used with FDA-cleared Sound Therapy devices is considerable higher than by self-directed care.
